Luxembourg: "Bewosst", a project for real inclusion

In Luxembourg, the Bewosst project focuses on raising awareness of the realities of people with disabilities, visible or not, especially in the hospitality sector. Goal: to remove physical and mental barriers for a more inclusive society.

1. What is the Bewosst project?

The Ministry of Family, Solidarity, Society and Reception, Info-Handicap and the federation Horesca Luxembourg are launching Bewosst ("aware").

This project aims to raise public awareness, especially businesses in the hospitality sector such as hotels, cafes, and restaurants, to better integrate people with disabilities, both visible (mobility, sensory) and invisible (autism, attention disorders...).

2. Some notable figures and testimonials

  • In Luxembourg, 15% of the population is affected by a disability, which corresponds to approximately 100,000 people.

  • Of these, 80% state that their disability is not visible from outside.

  • Joanne Theisen, autistic with attention disorder, describes daily challenging moments: restlessness, sensory overload, need for patience, etc.

3. Planned actions and target groups

  • Raising awareness among companies, starting with hospitality venues.

  • Introduction of "quiet hours": dimmed lighting, soft music, already implemented in 34 stores; extended to cafes and restaurants for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3.

  • The project also aims to reach sectors like dentists, bakers, grocers, etc. to recommend more inclusive measures.

  • Encouraging employers to offer accessible jobs to people with disabilities.
